Engagement is loosely defined as likes, comments, follows, and messages.
In order to have your account grow, you must “engage” with other Instagram users (and potential customers!) that you feel are relevant to you. To be transparent, this is probably the most time consuming part of succeeding on Instagram, if you do it well.
How to Engage with Others
From most important to least important, in my experience.
- Comment on their photos with a genuine response. “Wow, I love this caption, it’s hilarious!” or “This is insane, love your photo!” and NOT just an emoji or single word – “Cool” “Wow”. That seems like spam.
- Follow them. They are likely to follow back.
- Like their photos. If you like multiple photos on their feed, you are likely to show up in their notifications and they may take a look at your profile.
- Send them a direct message. This can sometimes get a little invasive or creepy, so make sure you have something clear and important to say. It all varies.
Focus on how to be social, not on how to do social.
Keep yourself inspired. Keep trying new things. Social media is ever-changing, so don’t be afraid to take risks! In the end, it’s about your passion. Have fun with social media and it will show!
